Local Job Market Remains Strong in Waterbury
  • Employment Trends: Waterbury’s local job market saw a decrease of 300 jobs in the most recent month reported, reflecting a -0.4% change in nonfarm employment for the Waterbury labor market area. This is consistent with broader Connecticut trends, where private sector employment declined by 6,500 positions statewide in May 2025.
  • Unemployment Rate: The most recent unemployment data for the Waterbury area shows a rate of 3.4% as of December 2024, with more recent state-level data indicating a slight upward trend in early 2025. The civilian labor force in the Waterbury area was approximately 110,000 people at the end of 2024.
  • Job Openings: There is no evidence of 34,000 job openings specifically within Waterbury. Statewide, Connecticut has about 90,000 job openings, with approximately 74,000 people looking for work. Waterbury’s share would be a fraction of this figure, and job board search results often reflect a much broader region than the city itself.
  • Economic Context: Connecticut’s job growth has slowed, and Waterbury experienced a minor contraction in employment last month. The state’s labor force remains below pre-pandemic levels, and policymakers are encouraged to focus on accelerating job growth and making Connecticut more attractive for business.

Summary
As of late June 2025, Waterbury’s job market is experiencing a slight decline in employment, mirroring statewide trends. The city’s unemployment rate remains relatively low, but the number of job openings specific to Waterbury is much lower than some online search results might suggest, as those often include jobs from the surrounding region and not just within city limits.

More Housing Kills Beautiful Nature

A developer has plans to create a new affordable housing “oasis” on the site of an old horse farm in Waterbury, with groundbreaking potentially set for November.  This project is poised to offer new housing options and possibly revitalize a local neighborhood.

The old horse farm being redeveloped for affordable housing is located off the northern side of Waterbury's most southeastern portion of Connecticut State Route 69 in Waterbury, near the border with Prospect.  The site is opposite the Aria Wedding and Banquet Facility and is bordered by Bateswood Drive on the west and Greenwood Road to the east.  The development is known as the "Forest Hills" project.

Currently, the land is home to a rich concentration of varied wildlife fauna, including many bird species, deer, and other animals, and a bountiful plant flora.  The parcel in question lies west of the Tunic Hill Brook; no other waterways have been indicated on any known map, yet there are several various ponds, swamps, and streams running through the area.

Only one posted sign was found to identify any public hearing of land use, and it is on a dead end street in Prospect Connecticut, camouflaged by foliage.

Owners of the property, according to governement records, are Sunrise Farm LLC, Post Office Box 290589, Wetheresfield, Connecticut, 06129.
