Some of the Irish of Waterbury

Ever since the Irish immigrants came to Waterbury they began leaving their mark.  If it wasn't for the Italians in Waterbury, the City would have been, at one time, predominantly Irish.  Three of Waterbury's neighborhoods have a strong Irish presence to this day: Hopeville, Gilmartin, and Cracker Hill.  

In professional baseball it's been Francis Rostell "Red" Donahue, Joe Fitzgerald, and Jack McMahon.  In professional football it's been Bob Dunn, and George Mulligan.  Running the City, it's been Mayors (Ed) Bergin, (Mike) Bergin, Donahue, Monagan, and O'Leary.  Recent Mayors for the Day include Collins, McCarthy, Kearney, O'Rourke, Byrnes, and others.  On stage, it's been Michael John Bergin, the supermodel and actor, and Mark Anthony "Dylan" McDermott, actor. 

In finance, E. Gerald Corrigan was a great success.  In Church, it's been Father and Chaplain Michael Thomas Conway and Father Michael J. McGivney - among others.  Harry K. Daghlian is a well-known physicist.  J. Farrell McDonald, Joseph F. McNellis, William P. "Hank" O'Donnell, and others, are all listed in Waterbury's Hall of Fame.  Inventors, like Alexander S. Mackey, and Congressmen like John Stephan Monagan, are among Waterbury's Irish notables.

In a city renowned for it's heavy Italian population, the Irish found home here starting over 100 years ago.  They, Janet Maher and John Wichn, even wrote a book about it, called "Waterbury Irish - From the Emerald Isle to the Brass City".

Restaurants and bars if Irish attraction include Shamrock Pub and Grill, and Top of the Mornin'.  Of Course the list of Irish influence can't be complete without mentioning the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
