Important Note About Waterbury Neighborhoods

NextDoor

Neighborhoods as per NextDoor.com, and other similar well-intended user-driven web resources, are arbitrary creations by random people who happen to discover those web resources.  In most cases, the individuals who create such neighborhoods are relatively new to their prospective geographic areas, do little or no historic or practical research into their neighborhoods, have no outward interest in preserving the history or culture of their neighborhoods, have not been successfully engaged by their local established neighborhood association, and don't understand the heritage of the City of Neighborhoods.  Their neighborhood boundaries are, again, arbitrary by default, inaccurate per historic documentation, inconsistent with the established and generally accepted neighborhood organizations, and are generally inconsistent with neighborhood safety programs (such as Crime Stoppers, Neighborhood Watch, Citizen's Patrol, and government sources).  Some individuals go through much effort and research to ensure that their presence as portrayed on such resource sites is accurate and consistent, and often team or partner with their established neighborhood associations, safety programs, and sports organizations.

Neighborhood Scout
As of September 17th, 2019, all of the neighborhood boundaries as per the map on Neighborhood Scout are in disagreement with the generally accepted boundaries per each of the Waterbury neighborhood associations which were surveyed thoroughly in the year 2015, and per the official maps of the Waterbury Neighborhood Council.  A comprehensive evaluation of the Waterbury neighborhoods was a brain child of then Upper Fulton Park Neighborhood Association President Richard Perreault, who tediously worked to define the outline of each associated neighborhood.  Independently, then recent Town Plot Neighborhood Association President and then Waterbury Neighborhood Council President Vincent E. Martinelli, also worked exhaustively to the same end as Perreault.  Although neither of the pair was aware of the other's efforts, the two eventually discovered the duplication and combined their findings.  Surprisingly, their results agreed in almost every detail.  The Waterbury Neighborhood Council, under Martinelli, adopted the neighborhood boundaries for each of the then member associations.  Their work included concerted interaction with each Waterbury Neighborhood Council member association, several non-member associations, city historians, and several public officials.  Their combined efforts have become, and are currently accepted as, the final authority of defined neighborhood boundaries throughout the city - especially as cultural and neighborhood maps.

The City of Waterbury
Many official maps of the City of Waterbury appear to combine various neighborhoods, not recognize some neighborhoods, and have outlines which do not agree with the official Perreault-Martinelli maps.  However, the official city maps have specific purposes, and such maps are for use exclusively for those purposes.  In fact, many of the city maps also seem to contradict themselves; again, each of the maps has a specific purpose.  Therefore, although such maps are official, and may include the word "neighborhood" in their description, they are limited to their intended purposes, and are not actually in contradiction to the Perreault-Martinelli maps.

NextDoor Neighborhoods

Note: NextDoor neighborhood boundaries are input by people who visit onto the NextDoor website and draw their neighborhood outlines with little or no regard for the generally accepted nor historic neighborhood boundaries.

  1. Bunker Hill - comprised of the area of which the Bunker Hill Neighborhood Association derives it’s most active members.  Although the name “Bunker Hill” in Waterbury has little or no actual historic relevance, it is a generally accepted neighborhood.  The traditional Bunker Hill neighborhood includes what NextDoor lists as Bunker Hill, Bunker Hill North, and other fragmented areas nearby.  The Bunker Hill Neighborhood Association is nearly defunct, and meets only irregularly and often without notice.
  2. Bunker Hill North - comprised of the more traditional Morningside and Newton Heights neighborhoods, and the more modern Heritage neighborhood.  This neighborhood was formerly part of the Bunker Hill neighborhood, but was largely ignored, or at least neglected by the Bunker Hill Neighborhood Association; therefore, residents developed their own neighborhood association, northwest of the Bunker Hill Neighborhood Associations primary audience.  The Bunker Hill North Neighborhood Association is nearly defunct, and meets only irregularly and often without notice.
  3. Country Club - comprised of part of the actual Country Club neighborhood.  There is no neighborhood association for the neighborhood.
  4. East Mountain
  5. Hillside
  6. Jersey
  7. Lakeside Boulevard - comprised of part of the larger and more historically accurate and accepted Western Hills neighborhood.  There is not neighborhood association for this neighborhood.
  8. Middlebury Tracey’s Pond - like so many other NextDoor neighborhoods, this neighborhood is historically non-existent.  The neighborhood is comprised as part of the larger and more historically accurate Wester Hills neighborhood.  There is no neighborhood association for this NextDoor neighborhood.
  9. Pearl Lake Road
  10. Piedmont-Main
  11. Ridges - comprised of part of the actual Country Club neighborhood, the Ridges is a housing development which was installed mostly in the 1950s.  There is no neighborhood association for this NextDoor neighborhood.
  12. Robinwood - comprised of part of the more historic Western Hills neighborhood and the more recently accepted Robinwood neighborhood.  There is no prevailing neighborhood association in Robinwood.
  13. Town Plot - comprised of the recently accepted Town Plot neighborhood.  The more traditional and historically accurate name for this neighborhood is Town Plot Hill.
  14. Town Plot - Murray Park
  15. Westmont Drive - comprised of a very small part of the Robinwood neighborhood, the Westmont Drive neighborhood has no historic validity.  There is no Robinwood neighborhood Association.
6 ways to create community in your neighborhood
Posted: May 31, 2019

It's easy to see the value of living in caring neighborhoods and being good neighbors.

One recent survey found 75 percent of Americans think it's important to welcome new neighbors, 58 percent say it's important for neighbors to socialize and 37 percent are more likely to seek help from a neighbor than a friend when it comes to small projects.

The chance to meet others is often cited as a primary reason millennials prefer living in urban neighborhoods. The survey found 58 percent of millennials have had face-to-face interactions with their neighbors, while 40 percent wish they were better connected than they already are.
Interested in becoming a better inhabitant of your own neighborhood? Consider these suggestions aimed at promoting a kinder, friendlier environment.

1) Introduce yourself. Take the first step. Instead of avoiding contact when in your yard or out for a walk, shake hands, say hi and make an effort to remember people’s names. Even when in-person contact is brief, it can go a long way toward helping people feel connected and more like friends than strangers.

2) Take new neighbors housewarming gifts. Make newcomers feel wanted and welcome by acknowledging their arrival with a thoughtful gift. One meaningful and sure-to-be-welcome idea is a beautifully fragranced soy candle from Bright Endeavors, a Chicago-area nonprofit that employs young mothers. Every purchase helps empower young women by teaching them job training and giving them the skills needed to gain permanent employment and provide for their children.

3) Give new families contact info for neighbors and neighborhood amenities. Include phone numbers for emergency services, doctors’ offices, dentists, schools, babysitters, entertainment options, sources of great takeout food, dry cleaners and any other assets you think may be helpful. People will appreciate your insider view into local amenities, and they’ll be more likely to communicate key information to others if their contact info is readily available.

4) Organize a neighborhood event. It could be as simple as a front-porch open house or as strategically planned as a neighborhood cleanup, but any gathering that brings people together to socialize is bound to create goodwill and a friendlier neighborhood vibe.

5) Stay aware of who needs help. When possible, organize meal delivery, dog walking, transportation or other assistance for neighbors going through tough times. Teaming up to help others may make your neighbors feel more connected, and people on the receiving end of such kindness tend to pay it forward.

6) Live by the golden rule. Treat your neighbors as you would like to be treated. Clean up after pets and kids, drive through at reasonable speeds, don’t be overly loud, mow at reasonable hours, return anything you’ve borrowed and generally stay aware of how you’re coming across to others.
It feels good to live in a neighborhood that feels more like a community than an anonymous collection of strangers. Consider how you can take the initiative to create warmth and peace within your own neighborhood.

The Tapestry of Diversity: Historic Complexities and Cultural Challenges and Benefits of Distinct Neighborhoods within a City Community

Introduction

Cities have always been a melting pot of cultures, with distinct neighborhoods often emerging as a result of various ethnic groups settling in specific areas. While these unique neighborhoods can provide a rich tapestry of cultural diversity, they also come with their own set of complexities and challenges. In this article, we will delve into the historical context of these neighborhoods and discuss the cultural difficulties and benefits they bring to the wider city community.

Historic Complexities

1. Formation of Ethnic Enclaves

The establishment of distinct neighborhoods in cities can be traced back to the waves of immigration that shaped the urban landscape. As immigrants arrived in a new city, they often sought out others who shared their language, culture, and traditions. This led to the formation of ethnic enclaves, with communities clustering in specific areas, creating distinct neighborhoods.

2. Economic Disparities

Over time, the economic development of these distinct neighborhoods has varied significantly, often due to factors such as access to resources, job opportunities, and educational facilities. This has resulted in stark economic disparities between neighborhoods, contributing to issues such as segregation, inequality, and gentrification.

Cultural Difficulties

1. Segregation and Discrimination

Distinct neighborhoods can sometimes contribute to the segregation of ethnic groups within a city, leading to a lack of interaction and understanding between different communities. This can perpetuate stereotypes and discrimination, creating tensions and fostering mistrust among residents.

2. Language Barriers

Language barriers can pose a significant challenge in diverse neighborhoods, making it difficult for residents to communicate and access important resources and services. This can lead to social isolation and hinder the integration of immigrant communities into the broader city community.

3. Gentrification and Displacement

As cities grow and develop, distinct neighborhoods can become targets for gentrification. This can result in the displacement of long-time residents and the loss of the cultural identity that made the neighborhood unique, creating tension and conflict within the community.

Cultural Benefits

1. Rich Cultural Heritage

Distinct neighborhoods offer a wealth of cultural heritage that enriches the city's overall cultural landscape. This includes unique architectural styles, traditional foods, art, and various cultural events and festivals that celebrate the history and customs of the neighborhood's residents.

2. Increased Cultural Awareness and Understanding

The presence of diverse neighborhoods within a city provides an opportunity for residents to learn about different cultures and traditions. This increased cultural awareness can foster greater understanding, empathy, and acceptance among residents, helping to break down barriers and reduce prejudice.

3. Economic and Creative Contributions

Distinct neighborhoods often bring unique economic and creative contributions to a city. This can include diverse businesses, such as ethnic restaurants and shops, which not only provide employment opportunities but also attract visitors and contribute to the local economy. Additionally, the creative contributions from these neighborhoods, such as art, music, and theater, can greatly enrich the city's cultural offerings.

Conclusion

The establishment of distinct neighborhoods within a city community offers both challenges and benefits. While the historic complexities and cultural difficulties that arise from these neighborhoods must be acknowledged and addressed, it is important to recognize the invaluable cultural richness they bring to the wider community. By working together to promote understanding, inclusivity, and equitable opportunities for all residents, cities can harness the full potential of their diverse neighborhoods and create a vibrant, thriving urban landscape that celebrates the unique tapestry of cultures that coexist within its borders.
