Hop Brook State Park is in Waterbury.  About half of the land mass is in Waterbury, and about two-thirds of the water is in Waterbury.  There are only two entrances ... one is in Middlebury, and the other is in Waterbury.
The Mattatuck State Forest is in Waterbury.  Well, at least part of it is.

​How High Are You?

  • At her lowest, the ground level in Waterbury is 219 feet above sea level.   ​At her highest, the ground level in Waterbury is 1,100 feet above sea level. 
    • That's a difference of almost 900 feet
    • Although, one source indicates 3 feet as the lowest point and 1,661 feet as the highest point, yielding a 1,658 difference from one point to another in Waterbury.  This measure, seating Waterbury only 3 feet above sea level, seems to contradict logic.
    • Yet another source, which is known to conglomerate other published data and regurgitate it without any attempt at verification, indicates a low point of 220 feet above sea level, and a high point of 820 feet above sea level.
  • At 919 feet above sea level, at the junction of Waterbury, Wolcott, and Plymouth is the highest point in Waterbury.  
  • The northernmost tip of Waterbury, very near the where the Hancock Brook and Plymouth meet Waterbury, is 453 feet above sea level. 
  • The southernmost tip of Waterbury, where Straits Turnpike in Waterbury becomes Church Street in Naugatuck, is at an elevation of 404 feet above sea level. 
  • The westernmost tip of Waterbury, where it meets Middlebury and Naugatuck, is 755 feet above sea level. 
  • The easternmost tip of Waterbury. where she meets Cheshire and Wolcott (colloquially the top of Southington Mountain), is 709 feet above sea level.  
  • The center of Waterbury, not to be confused with Waterbury Center (the center of the town in Vermont which was founded by emigrants from Waterbury and which was named after our infamous Brass City - Waterbury) is 302 feet above sea level.
  • Generally, the lowest elevations of Waterbury are along the banks of the Naugatuck River, and, generally, the further south, not surprisingly, the lower the elevations.  These areas approach actual sea level.
  • Ironically, Waterbury Vermont is indicated to be 218 feet above sea level at her lowest, and 715 feet above sea level at her highest.
