History of Crosby High School

Crosby High School, located in Waterbury, Connecticut, has a rich history dating back over 100 years. The school has been a cornerstone of the community, providing education and opportunities for generations of students.

The beginnings of Crosby High School can be traced back to the early 20th century. In 1903, the city of Waterbury purchased a plot of land on Pierpont Road to build a new high school. The building, designed by noted architect Ernest Flagg, was completed in 1905 and named after the first mayor of Waterbury, Dr. Henry S. Crosby.

The school quickly became a hub of activity, offering not only academic programs but also sports, music, and other extracurricular activities. In 1916, the school's football team won the state championship, and the following year, the school's basketball team won the state championship as well.

Over the years, Crosby High School has undergone several renovations and expansions to keep up with the growing needs of the community. In 1926, a new wing was added to the school, which included a library and science laboratories. In 1965, a new gymnasium was built, and in 2008, a new science and technology wing was added.

Throughout its history, Crosby High School has been known for its academic excellence and commitment to its students. The school has produced many successful alumni, including actors, politicians, and business leaders. One notable alumnus is Richard Blumenthal, who served as Connecticut's Attorney General before being elected to the United States Senate in 2010.

Despite the challenges faced by schools across the country, Crosby High School remains a vital part of the Waterbury community. The school continues to provide students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for success in the 21st century.

In conclusion, Crosby High School has a long and proud history, dating back over a century. The school has played a significant role in the development of the Waterbury community, and its commitment to academic excellence and student success remains as strong as ever.

Basketball History @ Crosby

Crosby High School in Waterbury, Connecticut, has a long and storied history when it comes to basketball. The school has produced some of the state's top players and teams, and its legacy in the sport is still felt today.

Basketball first arrived at Crosby in the 1920's, when the school fielded its first team. However, it wasn't until the 1940s that Crosby began to make a name for itself on the basketball court. Led by coach Walter "Doc" Kennedy, the Crosby Bulldogs quickly became one of the top teams in the state, winning multiple championships and producing several top-level players.

One of the most notable players to come out of Crosby during this time was Willie Hall, who played for the Bulldogs in the 1940s and later went on to play professionally in the NBA. Hall was known for his speed, agility, and ability to score from anywhere on the court, and he helped to cement Crosby's place as a basketball powerhouse.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Crosby continued to produce top-level players, including Earl Kelley and Ron Soccoli. Kelley, who played for Crosby in the early 1950s, was a dominant force on the court, earning All-State honors and leading the Bulldogs to multiple championships. Soccoli, who played for Crosby in the 1960s, was also a standout player, known for his scoring ability and strong defensive play.

In the 1970s, Crosby experienced a resurgence in basketball, led by coach Nick Augelli. Augelli, who had played for Crosby in the 1950s, returned to the school as a coach and quickly built a powerhouse team. The Crosby Bulldogs won three state championships during Augelli's tenure, and he went on to become one of the most successful coaches in Connecticut basketball history.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Crosby continued to produce top-level players, including Doug Herring, who played for the Bulldogs in the early 1990s and later went on to play professionally overseas.

Herring was known for his scoring ability and leadership on the court, and he helped to keep Crosby's basketball legacy alive.

Today, Crosby High School is still a force to be reckoned with in Connecticut basketball, with a strong program that continues to produce top-level players. The school's basketball legacy is celebrated by fans and alumni alike, who take pride in the Bulldogs' rich history on the court.
