About the Historic DistrictThe Historic District is roughly outlined by the intersection of State Street and West Main Street, going generally south-east until North Main Street, then south-south-west along North Main Street, until the intersection of East Main Street; the outline continues again generally south-east until the intersection of North Elm Street with South Elm Street; from there, in a roughly south-east direction, not following roadways, the outline reaches the intersection of Bank Street and Grand Street; then Grand Street to Cottage Place, then not following roadways to the intersection of Field Street with Meadow Street, and then north-north-west along Meadow Street, to Grand Street, to State Street - closing the odd loop.

Overlook Requests Park Use Again for Spring CleaningThe Historic Overlook Community Club, represented by President Mike Salvio, attended the City of Waterbury Board of Parks Commission meeting on November 19th, 2013, to request reserved use of Fulton Park for the semi-annual cleanup and restoration efforts. The Club, along with participation from the Parks Department and well over 200 community volunteers from all over the City, surrounding towns, and as far away as Danbury, Connecticut, join forces to remove litter, and, primarily, overgrowth from all areas of Fulton Park. "We even had help from Town Plot", remarked Salvio in his plea to reserve May 4th, 2014 and, as a rain date, May 18th, 2014.
Several hidden and forgotten gems have been rediscovered after decades of neglect and unplanned hiding. Salvio commented that many groups come together to restore this park, and emphasized that both the Christian and especially the Jewish communities, are largely responsible for the vast labor force. The park, after several decades of continually increasing rates of decay, has been re-graced of late, due to the relentless and tireless efforts of Salvio's neighborhood association, and cohorts thereof. Park Board Chair, Commissioner Picchocchi, sadly reflected that the park had already received a request to be reserved on the same date, location, and time. Salvio seemed pleased, expressing that the highest turnout of volunteers ever, for both the Fulton Park Cleanup and Restoration efforts, and for Domenic Rinaldi's famed Tulip Fest, have been when their coordination coincidently collided. Piccocchi and Salvio agreed to continue the request for the same dates, and were expected to make a final determination by the end of the meeting. Salvio delicately but firmly conveyed to the Board the importance of those specific dates, since the Jewish and Christian holidays occupy the rest of the calendar quarter, with the exception of Mother's Day, which Salvio affirmed, "We wouldn't dare to even thing about having it on Mother's Day". Salvio also indicated that it was hard to get the volunteers away from their work to stop to eat a "wonderful hotdog", indicating both his appreciation for, and the abundance of, dedicated loyalty to the sometimes strenous and typically dirty and dusty chores of the cleanup day. |
