Although the LGBTQ presence in Waterbury arguably always existed, awareness and manifestation of it oscillates from time to time. For instance, until about a quarter of a century ago, there were at least 4 "gay bars" in the City of Neighborhoods that flourished for decades. Similarly, a little over 100 years ago, having casual gay sex was known to be very common, mostly among married straight men, and was largely accepted by the Waterbury community - even among straight men's wives.

Today, some sources label Waterbury as having very few LGBTQ residents, which implies that some sort of census was taken - which may seem highly unlikely to many LGBTQ people. More likely, the authors of such reporting mistake lack of flamboyance for lack of presence.

Of course, gayness can be scalable. For instance, UCLA says that adults are two-and-a-half times more likely to be attracted to same-sex people as they are to actually identify as LGBTQ. This discrepancy may be due to self-restraint, partner commitments, bisexuality, et cetera.

Various sources show that adult Americans believe that 21% to 25% of adult Americans are "other than heterosexual", yet Gallup consistently finds that fewer than 4% of adult Americans actually "identify" as being gay/lesbian.

Still, over 8% of adult Americans admit to same-sex encounters, and at least 11% admit to considering same-sex experiences.

So, unless Waterbury is yet-again-special, an estimated 5,000 Brass City residents identify as being gay/lesbian, while nearly 15,000 Time Capital residents have either engaged in same-sex passion or desire to do so.

Yet another study shows that at least 37% of adult males in America have had actual same-gender sex. The same study shows that 13% of adult Americans are "predominantly gay" for at least 3 years between the ages of 16 and 55.

Regardless, it is very clear that people of the LGBTQ community have contributed to, and have had influence on, the evolution of Waterbury.
