Police ChiefsThe title of the top copper in the Brass City oscillated in time as follows:
* Chief ** Superintendent *** No Police Chief nor Superintendent in office Wardens, Selectmen, Councilmen, Aldermen, Freemen, and BurgessesIn the beginning, Waterbury, which officially became a municipality on June 25th, 1853, was governed by a Mayor and 4 Aldermen, and up to 20 Councilmen, 1 Treasurer, 2 Sheriffs, and an Auditor.
At that time, the Mayor presided over the Board of Aldermen. Each position carried a term of 1 year, until 1871 when the Mayor's seat became a 2-year term. In 2015, the Mayor's term was extended to 4 years. The term begins on the 1st day of the year following the election. The 1st City Charter reigned from 1853 to 1871. The 2nd Charter begain on the 1st day of 1872. Little is known about the Freemen, which may simply be a reference to a resident of the city. |
