Almeida, Jose David
The City of Waterbury honored Jose David Almeida, 78, as the Cape Verdean Mayor for the Day on Friday, October 30th, 2024 at City Hall during a Cape Verde flag raising ceremony. Almeida, who was born in Cape Verde in 1946, came to Connecticut at the age of 15 in pursuit of the American dream. He held several manufacturing jobs and helped other Cape Verdeans enter the workforce, eventually becoming a plater at Pratt & Whitney, where he worked for 35 years. Almeida is an active member of the Cape Verdean Social Club of Waterbury, which was founded in 1935 as a place for Cape Verdeans to gather and celebrate their culture. The Mayor for the Day event is a tradition between the city and the club that dates back about 15 years, and is held in conjunction with the club's anniversary. This year, the club is celebrating its 89th anniversary. The celebrations continued on the following Saturday at the Cape Verdean Social Club, featuring food, music, and opportunities to learn about Cape Verdean culture. |
