How Camping Has Evolved in the Past 3 Years
by Vincent E. Martinelli, Jr.
The Impact of Fuel Prices on The Camping Industry
The seemingly every-changing cost of “fossil” *1 fuel has always had a significant impact on the camping industry, as it affects the price of transportation for both campers and camping equipment. When fuel prices are high, camping trips are more expensive for consumers, which may lead to fewer people going camping. Conversely, higher fuel prices can make camping trips far more popular than less affordable hotel and resort trips. Additionally, higher fuel costs increase the operating expenses of camping grounds and recreational vehicle (RV) parks, causing them to pass the increased expenses on to the consumer. |
“I just want to live in a world of mountains, coffee, campfires, cabins, and golden trees, and run around with a camera and notebook, learning the inner workings of everything real.” |
Rising fuel prices impact the manufacturing and distribution of camping equipment. It costs more to ship the products and materials to and from the factories, and that results in higher prices for camping gear.
However, the camping industry is a resilient one, and camping has historically remained popular even, and perhaps especially, during times of high fuel prices. People tend to look for alternative and budget-friendly options or prioritize their spending on experiences that they value and enjoy, such as camping. Even in the face of high fuel prices, many people are willing to pay a bit extra to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with family and friends.

The Impact of The Pandemic on The Camping Industry
The CoVid-19 pandemic *2 has had a significant impact on the camping industry across the globe. With restrictive, and perhaps archaic, lockdowns and travel restrictions in place, many people were disallowed from freely traveling across state lines, and many camping businesses were forced to close. |
“And at the end of the day, your feet should be dirty, your hair messy and your eyes sparkling.” |
In the initial stage of pandemic, camping businesses saw a sharp drop in reservations and a sharp rise in booking cancellations. Campsites, RV parks, and other camping-related businesses, were also forced, whether by logic or law, had to implement new protocols to keep visitors relatively safe from the spread of the disease, such as limiting the number of guests, increasing cleaning and sanitization, and implementing social distancing measures.
However, as restrictions lifted and the population adapted to the “new normal”, the camping industry saw a resurgence in popularity as people looked for ways to safely get outside, get a breath of fresh air, literally and emotionally, and enjoy nature during the pandemic. Many campers turned to private or “backcountry” camping as an alternative to crowded or closed camping grounds or RV parks. This also led to an increase in demand for RVs, tents, and camping gear.
The high demand for rented and leased land for camping, RVs, motorhomes, and the like, resulted in some landowners dramatically increasing the cost to their tenants. In many cases, entire camping neighborhoods and campgrounds priced these renters and lessors out of the land and the landlords made room for higher-paying clientele.
As controversial treatments and vaccines *3 rolled out, and the world returned to some form of normalcy, it is expected that the camping industry will continue to recover, and it will take some time for it to return to pre-pandemic levels. The industry may also see some permanent changes, such as increased focus on sanitation and cleanliness, greater availability of online bookings and contactless payment, and more stringent health and safety guidelines for both visitors and employees.

“Camping is not a date; it’s an endurance test. If you can survive camping with someone, you should marry them on the way home.” |

“Teaching children about the natural world should be seen as one of the most important events in their lives.” |
New Camping Innovations
There are many new, or newly improved, innovations in the camping industry that are designed to make camping more comfortable, convenient, and sustainable. Some examples include:

- Portable camping toilets: Portable toilets are becoming increasingly popular for camping, as they allow campers to have a more comfortable and hygienic camping experience without having to rely on pit toilets or other primitive facilities. Some portable toilets use a chemical process to break down waste, while others use a sealed container that can be emptied into a conventional toilet.
- Foldable camping furniture: There are many new options for foldable and compact camping furniture, such as chairs, tables, and even full-size beds, that are easy to transport and set up, and take up minimal space when not in use.
- Eco-friendly camping gear: Many camping gear manufacturers are now creating products that are more sustainable and environmentally friendly. For example, companies are now creating camping gear that is made from recycled materials, or using more eco-friendly manufacturing processes.
These are just a few examples of the many new innovations in the camping industry, and there are likely to be many more in the future as technology continues to advance and the industry continues to evolve.
*1 “Fossil” fuels
“Fossil” is a misnomer. Fossil fuels never came from the fossils of dinosaurs. Period. Ever. Kinda. The over-used, archaic misnomer “fossil” fuels include coal, petroleum, and “natural” gas. Fossil fuels, or at least petroleum, are thought to be the result of millions of years of compressing the decaying remains of plants and animals. Coal is more likely to be of a plant base, and is technically rock.

*2 CoVid-19
The recent pandemic, which was caused by a laboratory-created, or enhanced, virus, and which was funded, at least in part, by the United States government and one or more American business. The virus, which escaped a laboratory in Wuhan China back in 2019, and the resultant worldwide sickness (the rapid spread of which is largely due to the Chinese government deliberately holding the escape secret), was dubbed the CoViD-19 pandemic (scientifically named as a shortening of “Corona Virus Disease of 2019”). The rapid spread caused worldwide panic, seemingly random and sometimes ineffective policies and procedures, and both political and commercial corruption. Said policies and panic impacted many industries, including camping; some industries benefited, some suffered, some were forced to endure the severe ups and downs in business, and many businesses within many industries perished. *3 Vaccines No CoViD-19 vaccine has ever prevented nor reduced the spread of CoViD-19, nor have any of the manufacturers ever stated their vaccine would do so, despite the proclamations of many political and news icons. In a high percentage of cases, CoViD-19 vaccines dramatically reduce the severity of the disease. |
