History of Basketball @ Sacred HeartSacred Heart High School in Waterbury, Connecticut, has a proud history when it comes to basketball. The school's basketball program has produced some of the top players in the state, and its legacy in the sport is still felt today. Basketball first arrived at Sacred Heart in the 1960s, when the school fielded its first team. In the early years, the team struggled to find success, but things began to turn around in the 1970s, under the leadership of coach Ed Generali. Generali, who had played for Kennedy High School in the 1960s, returned to Waterbury as a coach and quickly built a competitive team. The Sacred Heart Hearts won multiple championships during Generali's tenure, and he went on to become one of the most successful coaches in Connecticut basketball history. One of the most notable players to come out of Sacred Heart during this time was Earl Kelley, who played for the Hearts in the late 1970s. Kelley was a dominant force on the court, known for his scoring ability and strong defensive play. He went on to play for the University of Connecticut before embarking on a successful career as a professional basketball player overseas. In the 1980s and 1990s, Sacred Heart continued to produce top-level players, including Brett Bissonnette and Tony Hanson. Bissonnette, who played for the Hearts in the early 1980s, was a standout player known for his scoring ability and leadership on the court. Hanson, who played for Sacred Heart in the mid-1990s, was also a standout player, known for his athleticism and strong defensive play. In the 2000s and 2010s, Sacred Heart experienced a resurgence in basketball, led by coach Jon Carroll. Carroll, who had played for Sacred Heart in the 1990s, returned to the school as a coach and quickly built a powerhouse team. The Sacred Heart Hearts won multiple state championships during Carroll's tenure, and he went on to become one of the most successful coaches in Connecticut basketball history.
