Fairy Village
The Cursed Whispers of Little People's Villageby Vincent E. Martinelli, Jr.
You can't get there from here, but you can - if you leave.
This abandoned fairy village, sometimes referred to as the Little People's Village, is nestled in the woods of western Waterbury. In many tales, this village has been eroneously identifyied as being located in nearby Middlebury; the property is wholely in Waterbury, although it can only be accessed via a foresaken path from Middlebury's Straits Turnpike. The site includes tiny houses carved into a stone cliff and a giant throne, creating a haunting and surreal atmosphere. Folklore surrounding this site is varied.
Deep in the shadowy woods of Waterbury's far west, lies a forgotten realm of crumbling miniature structures and eerie stone ruins. Known as Little People's Village, this abandoned site has long been shrouded in dark legends and unexplained phenomena. So foresaken is this land that the only road into it has been deliberately by the City of Waterbury to decay into hopeful invisibility. The only way to get in is to encroch via Middlebury, despite that the entirely of the spooky "little" village is wholey homed within the Brass City limits.
Local lore speaks of a couple driven to madness by otherworldly voices in the early 1900s. The wife, rumored to be a witch, claimed to see tiny fairy folk dancing in the moonlit forest. Desperate to appease these supernatural beings, she forced her husband to construct an entire village of doll-sized houses. As the tiny town grew, so too did the couple's descent into insanity. Other whispered tales tell of a lone man, tormented by disembodied voices demanding that he build them a kingdom. Day and night he labored, erecting miniature structures and carving an ornate stone throne for their unseen ruler. In the end, the voices consumed him entirely. Maybe one of those stories is true. Maybe both of the stories are simultaneously true. Maybe they're both true, but in different realms or times or realities. Whichever is true, today, the decaying remnants of Little People's Village stand as a chilling testament to those lost souls. Visitors report overwhelming feelings of dread and unseen eyes watching from the shadows. Some claim to hear faint, childlike laughter echoing through the trees or catch glimpses of small, darting figures just beyond their vision. At the heart of the village sits the reputedly cursed throne, said to bring death within seven years to any who dare to sit upon it. Even those who dismiss such superstitions find themselves unable to shake an inexplicable sense of foreboding in its presence. While skeptics claim the site was merely an abandoned trolley attraction, those who've experienced Little People's Village firsthand know there are some things that defy rational explanation. As nature slowly reclaims the ruins, one can't help but wonder - do the little people still lurk among the mossy stones, waiting to lure in new victims to expand their mystical domain? Today, it stands as a decaying remnant of the past, with overgrown gardens and crumbling fairy houses.
Venture into these haunted woods at your own risk, for once you've entered the realm of the little people, you may never truly escape.
