Business Tidbits

~ In 1926, Route 1 ran through Waterbury Connecticut.
~ George Cohen advertised for a production company to offer a tabular version of popular musical comedies to be performed at a Waterbury theater of 800 seats, back in a 1921 publication of the New York Billboard (newspaper).
~ According to an 1882 publication of the Saratoga Springs Sentinel, "The smallest steam engine in the world was made by D. A. A. Buck, of Waterbury, Connecticut.  The engine, boiler, governor, and pumps stand in a space sever-sixteenths of an inch square, or the area of a gold dollar, and five-eighths of an inch high.  The engine has 148 distinct pieces of machinery, held together by fifty-two screws.  Three drops of water fill the boiler to overflowing.  The diameter of the cylinder is a sixteenth of an inch.  The length of stroke three thrity-seconds of an inch.  The whold engine weighs three grains.
~ A "Boston Traveller" reported, in an 1857 publication of the Memphis Tennessee Daily Appeal, that a Waterbury "manufactory" can "turn out any quantity" of a new metal called oeride.  The metal is, according to this Boston Traveller, nearly indistinguishable from gold, and costs many times less.  He warned "the public need to be on their guard in the purchase of gold-chased ware and gold dust" from dishonest men.
~ The Harry J. Bennet Greater Shows opened it's season, in 1919, at Waterbury Connecticut.
~ In 1922, William H. Pheonix of Waterbury Connecticut advertised in the New York Billboard (newspaper) for the hiring need of an experienced A-1 Cornetist.  It's unclear in the publication whether Pheonix was seeking someone to fill wafers with ice cream or someone to play in a band of musicians.
~ Between the years 1926 and 1928, the Anaconda company of Waterbury advertised, in a Buffalo New York newspaper, it's rust-proof gutters, rain pipes, and flashings - boasting that Anaconda copper "never requires painting, repairing, or replacing".
~ Camden New York has everything, according to an editorial in a 1900 publication of the Camden Advance - including buttons, hooks, eyes, and pins from Waterbury Connecticut.
~ According to a 1923 printing of the Summit Herald and the Summit Record of Summit New Jersey, a Waterbury Connecticut excavating company dug up a cemetery as a location of a then future business building.  In their dig, they shoveled up the remains of two unidentified people and a named woman, tombstone in tact.  "They tossed her out with the other two skeletons".  The woman still had a "mass of chestnut brown hair in perfect state of preservation", despite having been buried, at the age of 33, more than 100 years prior.

A Diamond is a Diamond, except not exactly, in Waterbury

While Waterbury, Connecticut, is famous as the "Brass City" and a center for watch and clock-making, it's not known for a specific history related to diamonds themselves, but rather for the Diamond Beverage Corporation, which bottled and distributed beverages, including ginger ale, in the area.

Here's a more detailed look:
  • Diamond Beverage Corporation:
    • The Diamond Beverage Corporation, later Diamond Ginger Ale, Inc., started in Naugatuck in 1865 and moved to Waterbury in the 1880s, operating its bottling plant in the South End (1663 South Main St.).
    • In 1946, Diamond employed 18 route drivers and distributed its beverages throughout the state.
    • The company offered various flavors, including ginger ale, Pal, grape, root beer, and cream soda.
    • The company was purchased by Silver Bros. Beverage Co. in 1970 and later by Tri-State Canada Dry Co. in 1974, with the bottling equipment moved to New York, and Diamond officially dissolved in June 1976.
