About the
Bucks Hill Neighborhood

  1. Location of the Bucks Hill Neighborhood
    1. The Bucks Hill neighborhood is located in the northern most part of Waterbury.
      1. Although the City of Waterbury owns, or has rights to, various "out-of-town" land and water
      2. Some maps of Waterbury indicate that a sliver of land and the Naugatuck River extends far north of the Bucks Hill neighborhood as part of Waterville
        1. including part of the Mattatuck State Forest
    2. The area is mostly rocky, with large boulders throughout, and shallow ledge also throughout.
    3. The area is of significant historic relevance.
    4. It can be argued that Bucks Hill is either
      1. A large neighborhood of Waterbury, or
      2. A sector of Waterbury which includes several neighborhoods, one of which is also designated as Bucks Hill
    5. Bucks Hill also has significant ties to
      1. the former Town of Waterbury (during the period when both the Town of Waterbury and the City of Waterbury existed)
      2. Connecticut State history
      3. The Red Men of pre-Waterbury and early Waterbury, including several Tribes (see Red Men here).
    6. Bucks Hill is the gateway to Litchfield County, bordering
      1. Poland (now knows as Terryville)
      2. Plymouth
      3. Thomaston
    7. Bucks Hill also borders the historically significant
      1. Town of Wolcott (part of which is formerly Waterbury)
      2. Waterville (formerly its own village)
  2. History of the Bucks Hill Neighborhood
    1. Rumors of the naming of Bucks Hill range from being named after some guy named Buck, to a deer which leapt from a cliff, but there is no known definitive evidence of such naming
    2. One of the first-known churches in Waterbury, the Methodist Episcopal Church, was organized at the home of Timothy Ball in Bucks Hill, circa 1796, and at the residence of Widow David Wheeler at Pine Hole.
    3. In the year 1810, Mark Leavenworth, William K. Lamson, and Auson Sperry manufactured wooden clocks at a location on Bucks Hill Road (however, Bucks Hill Road once began at The Green, and, at one time, the entirety of Bucks Hill Road was the entirety of what is now North Main Street; it is unknown if this location was in Downtown, Bucks Hill, or some neighborhood between Bucks Hill and Downtown)
    4. Bucks Hill Road was extended in as early as the year 1702, and then extended through Hancox Brook Meadow, Ash Swamp and Poland to the border of Farmington beginning in as the year 1715 and completed by 1731.
    5. There is some evidence that present day Boyden Street may have existed as a road in as early as 1735.
  3. Other Names for the Bucks Hill Neighborhood
    1. Buckshill
    2. Bucks Meadow Mountain, circa 1737
    3. Evidence exists that includes other names for the neighborhood preceded its current designation, none of which have yet been verified, most of which seem to have been known by local area Native American [indigenous] tribes.

Multiple Injuries After Double Crash
A series of crashes involving three vehicles on Thursday night has resulted in several people being transported to local hospitals, according to police.
The incident began around 9:40 p.m. when officers responded to a two-car collision at the intersection of Chase Avenue and Hill Street. As the drivers of those initial vehicles had exited their cars, a third vehicle struck the rear of one of the cars involved in the original crash, hitting one of the drivers.
"Several of the people in the vehicles involved were transported to area hospitals for what was described as non-life-threatening injuries," said Waterbury Police Lieutenant Ryan Bessette.
The crashes remain under investigation by authorities. No further details on the victims or the circumstances leading up to the incident have been released at this time.
This marks the second major multi-vehicle accident in Waterbury this month, highlighting the need for increased safety measures and driver awareness in the city.
Local officials have pledged to review the intersection where Thursday's crashes occurred to determine if any engineering changes or enhanced traffic controls could help prevent similar incidents in the future.

Neighborhood Group Hit by Vandals

Bucks Hill:  On or about Christmas Eve, some "ruthless uncaring individuals" broke into the Bucks Hill Community Clubhouse on North Main Street in Waterbury, and cut away a few feet of copper pipe, according to Bucks Hill Community Club President Mel Cooney.  "The value of the scrap metal would probably amount to about two or three dollars" according to Cooney, but the cutting of the pipe caused flooding of up to 3" of water in the clubhouse basement.  The flooding also caused damage to the building's furnace and to its water heater.

The damage was discovered when Board of Director member Al Coppola was performing a routine check of the premises in preparation for a weekend rental of the hall by a 3rd party.  Cooney credits the Waterbury Fire Department "for their assistance in drying out the building and pumping the water from the basement", and is grateful for their services.

The related repairs were completed, and the Club will continue to host their meetings as scheduled.
