Hillbright:
A Lakewood Neighbor-hood

Disclosure

Although this, and many other neighborhood associations and neighborhood community clubs have existed in this city for, in some cases, over 100 years, and although none of them have ever been neighborhood housing associations, they have been erroneously listed as such on the official City of Waterbury website as such.  To be clear, neighborhood housing associations are very much different from condo associations, and both of those are very different from organizations such as Neighborhood Housing Services of Waterbury (NHSW) and Loyola Development Corporation, and all of those are vastly different from any of Waterbury's neighborhood associations and neighborhood community clubs.  The function, purpose, and manifestation of each of these types of organizations is significantly different, and none should be confused with the other.

                        MEETING
  • Mon, Oct 24, 2016 6:30 PM
  • 394 Lakewood Rd
    394 Lakewood Road, Waterbury, CT
  • The Lakewood Neighborhood Association will hold its next meeting on Monday October 24th @ 6:30PM at the Lakewood Social Club & Bistro, 394 Lakewood Road.

Our Community Officer Matt Lemos of the Waterbury Community Police Division will be on hand to hear concerns, provide feedback and take Q&A of what is happening in your area of the neighborhood. Come and have your voices heard and be a part of the solution for the Lakewood neighborhood to help keep us unified in supporting what matters to everyone. We are still accepting new members.

Refreshments will be served. We'll also be doing a 50/50 raffle. Come on in and join us to share your ideas on how we can make the neighborhood stronger.

We have a guest speaker this month, Joy Brown from our neighboring association, Bouley Manor Neighborhood Association, to give a presentation on the history behind the Welton Arch on Wolcott St and what their neighborhood is doing to preserve this historical structure. I’m sure you’ve all driven past it at the junction of Wolcott St and Manor Ave.

The Lakewood Neighborhood is working closely with Bouley Manor and various other resources to compile historical data including pictures, articles, post cards and etc on Lakewood Park and history of the area so that we can also put together a booklet and PowerPoint slide presentation to present to our neighbors and neighboring associations. We have numerous resources at our disposal, like the CT State Library, Mattatuck Museum and any information our local residents may have on the park. For instance -- was Lakewood Park always a city park, if so when was it commissioned or was privately owned and at what point did it become a city park.

Would you like to be part of a History Committee for our Lakewood Association? Join us at our next meeting on October 24th .

Looking forward to seeing you there.

We are still accepting new members.  Come and be a part of the community voice that helps build a safer and concerned neighborhood community.

Lakewood Gets Support From West

WATERBURY  In an effort to reign in the recent show of interest and enthusiasm in the Lakewood Neighborhood Association, several other associations have been lending helping hands.  Waterbury Neighborhood Council Vice-President Richard Perrault has organized and lead a team of volunteers from within and from without the Lakewood neighborhood.  Pounding the pavement together, the various sets of teams spanned the entire Lakewood neighborhood over the course of several days, dropping informational leaflets at the doors of several hundred residents.

Most recently, the Presidents of the Waterville Community Club and the Town Plot Neighborhood Association joined in to help support.  Also the President of his neighborhood association, Perrault canvassed the area with each of the teams.  After ending their intended shift at 6:30 p.m., volunteers put in a call to Perrault - asking for more flyers so that they can distribute a final push of the pamphlets to an additional 5 streets.

Several residents have actively endorsed the efforts of the volunteers.  A resident of Hamden Street outwardly expressed her dissatisfaction with her condominium association, saying, "they barely have a meeting once a year".  She was happy to know that the neighborhood in general is working to address the concerns of neighbors.

A Carmel Street resident said, "I'm glad you came.  I'm really glad you came because there's something going on here, and we need to fix it".  Without elaborating on the specifics of his concerns, he offered to bring refreshments to this Tuesday's meeting, which is to be held at the Lakewood Social Club at 474 Lakewood Road at 7:00 p.m.

A Farmwood Road resident was surprised to learn that the Lakewood Neighborhood Association has accomplished so much.  He had never joined any associations before - saying, "I'm a Ponte and if I wanted to join anything it would be the Pontelandolfo Club - but, after living in the same house for 74 years, he plans to join the Lakewood Neighborhood Association.

So, why has the Lakewood neighborhood become the recipient of such an energetic influx of volunteer labor?  Well, it's really not that unusual for one neighborhood to help another.  Perrault also led similar endeavors in other neighborhoods, and the benefit is clearly worth the efforts.

Assistance isn't exclusive to members of the Waterbury Neighborhood Council (WNC) either.  The Bouley Manor Neighborhood Association (WNC member) has an ongoing partnership with the East Mountain Neighborhood Association (not a WNC member).  Several neighborhood associations - regardless of whether they are members of the WNC - have sent representation to the Fulton Park cleanup efforts - a product of the Historic Overlook Community Club, through the leadership of President Mike Salvio.

Despite Perrault's exerted efforts and long hours of revitalizing the all-but-defunct Country Club Neighborhood Association recently, President Don Piombo hasn't have any meetings since the out-pour of support to his neighborhood.  However, when their fight against the 300-foot stadium lighting - which was set to be installed at Post University on Country Club Road - was in eminent danger of failing, the Town Plot Neighborhood Association stepped in to show support, and the lighting plan quickly flickered out into the darkness.  The Town Plot Neighborhood Association, along with another half-dozen or so other neighborhood associations, showed unwavering support to the Bucks Hill Community Club in their fight against the re-naming of Bucks Hill School - and the re-naming flat-out flopped.

Perrault is quick to show his appreciation for the efforts of so many people throughout the City, and showed tremendous appreciation to the Lakewood Social Club for their ongoing support of the community and of the Lakewood Neighborhood Association.
