Citizen's Police Academy
The Waterbury Police Department is pleased to announce the Spring Session of the Citizens Police Academy. The Citizens Academy will begin on Monday March 23,2015 from 6-8 PM and will meet at the same time every Monday until the academy’s completion on May, 04, 2015. There is an application process and all applications should be submitted by Friday March 13, 2015. Applications can either be picked up at the Community Relations Office, located at 240 Bank St. Waterbury, CT or you can email your community police officer and an application can be brought to you. Applications will also be available at several neighborhood association meetings. We ask that all applications either be brought to the Community Relations Division or to your community police officer. Please do not return the applications to the Police Department’s main building. Waterbury Police Department - Citizen’s Police Academy The goal of the Waterbury Police Citizen’s Police Academy is to foster a better relationship between the community and the police department through training. It is envisioned that graduates will gain an understanding of the operation of the Waterbury Police Department and develop an awareness and understanding of the various challenges and decisions faced daily by Waterbury Police Officers. Even though the selected citizens are given training in numerous police-related subjects, the graduates are not prepared for nor expected to conduct any police services. Rather, it is our hope that the graduates will be goodwill ambassadors for the Waterbury Police Department. Requirements for admission to the academy include: 1. Minimum age of 18 years old; 2. Must be a resident of Waterbury, or 3. Must be a business owner in Waterbury, or 4. Is involved with the Waterbury Community, i.e. working with youth agencies/groups, or working in the City of Waterbury, etc. Because of the sensitive nature of police work, a background investigation is completed on each of the applicants. This investigation includes a criminal history, driver’s license status and a warrant check. During the seven week program, students are exposed to a variety of police topics including: 1. Uniform Patrol/Hiring/Training 2. Community Policing 3. Traffic Enforcement/Accident Reconstruction 4. Emergency Response Team 5. K-9/Use of Force 6. Criminal Justice System/States Attorney’s Office 7. Tour of the Waterbury Police Department 8. Professional Standards At the end of the academy, the students are invited to attend a graduation ceremony and photo session. LinksWaterbury Police Department official page

It isn't often that the Waterbury Police Department (WPD) reaches out to the Waterbury Neighborhood Council (WNC) for assistance. However, the WPD has asked for the help of the WNC in preventing, depending on your neighborhood, up to 90% of car-related crimes. The vast majority of all car thefts, and car break-ins, happens when the doors are left unlocked. In many cases, the keys are also left in the vehicles' ignition. Therefore, the WPD reminds and pleads with residents, to keep their cars locked at all times. This is especially important during the upcoming months, when people tend to warm up their cars, leaving the keys in the ignition and the door's unlocked. "Our Community Police Officers remind us of this at each neighborhood association meeting they attend" current WNC President Vincent E. Martinelli said, "yet car-related crimes remain one of the City’s most avoidable issues". Leaving cars unlocked not only invites criminals to break into your car, statistics show, but it can also lead to slower, or declined, insurance claims investigations and payments, according consulted licensed insurance professionals. "It's our responsibility as Citizens to do the best we can to prevent needless crimes", WNC President Vincent E. Martinelli adds. By request of Police Chief Vern Riddick and the WPD, please remember to keep your vehicles locked at all times. Please share this message with everyone in your sphere of influence. |
