Police Pipes and Drums of Waterbury
in Saint Patrick's Day Parades
WATERBURY
The Police Pipes and Drums of Waterbury made an appearance on Good Morning Connecticut today, Sunday, March 4th, 2018, a day after they marched in Waterbury's annual cultural Saint Patrick's Day Parade. The group will also march in New Haven's annual cultural Saint Patrick's Day Parade on March 11th, 2018.
The Police Pipes and Drums of Waterbury was formed over 20 years ago as a non-profit organization in honor of a fallen Waterbury police hero. One of their main fundraisers will be held on April 7th, 2018 at the Ancient Order of Hibernians, 91 Golden Hill Street in Washington (the Waterbury neighborhood).
The Order was formed reportedly 40 years ago.
The parade included over 400 participants, including the parade Chairman Ray Work, and the parade's Grand Marshall Sandy McDonald. Over 2.5 miles, the parade brought the booming and snapping sounds of the Irish National Anthem from Washington Park on Sylvan Avenue, to Edgewood Avenue, Whittlesey Avenue, Golden Hill Street, and others. In addition to the Police Pipes and Drums of Waterbury, 35 other groups marched the route, including the Mattatuck Fife and Drum Corp, the Catholic Academy of Waterbury, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church School, the Boy Scout troop 302 of Waterbury, the Cub Scout pack 20 of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Veteran's of Foreign War (VFW) post 1330, the Waterbury Fire Department, the Franco American Club, and many others.
Hundreds of spectators and descendants of Ireland along the parade's route watched the many shades of green pay tribute to their heritage. At least 300 people followed the parade to it's landing point, the Ancient Order of Hibernians club, for food, feast, and frolic. Many family clans brought several of their kin to help celebrate the event, and several leprechauns were witnessed as well.
