At our next meeting, November 11th, there will be a non-perishable food drive for Saint Vincent de Paul's Mission, and the Waterbury food bank. Mark it on your calenders and save the date!
50/50 Congratulations/Thanks
Congratulations to Chris Cipriano on winning the 50/50 raffle for $51 at the Ocbober 2013 meeting! At her request, she donated her winnings to the Saint Vincent DePaul food bank in Waterbury.
Similarly, the $67 winner of the November 2013 50/50 raffle gave back $17.
The raffle, which benefits the Order, occurs at every member meeting.
Thank you to all of those who participated. The raffle was a success, and we look forward to our meeting on October 14th for the next drawing!
October 2013 Meeting Highlights
WATERBURY The Waterbury Sons and Daughters of Italy held their monthly membership meeting at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Hall on Monday, October 14th, 2013. At least 32 people attended, and the membership is 59 and growing.
The new balance in the treasury is $2,299.86. The organization will hold its annual Columbus Day dinner on November 2nd, 2013, at 6:30 p.m.
John Lombardi, Chairperson of the Charities Committee is working with the committee on a Thanksgiving dinner. The next event may be a clothes-gathering to aid the homeless. Bozutos, Inc., a Cheshire based food wholesaler, has agreed to allow the Waterbury Sons and Daughters of Italy to circulate informational flyers regarding charity events.
Radio stations and shows, including the Tom Chute show, have aired various informative pieces for the Order. Kyle Deriu continues to update the Facebook page, and said that 'likes' are lower than anticipated.
John Lombardi, Chairperson of the Envelopes and Stationery Committee, has been unable to order printed materials, as he needs logo copy from the grand lodge.
Rosalie Rinaldi, Chairperson of the fundraising Committee, said that the Chili's Restaurant fundraiser was disappointing. Only 12 coupons were presented the night of the event, and $78 was earned. The restaurant donated an additional $22, for a total of $100 raised from the activity.
Frank Travisano, Chairperson of the Italian Societies Committee, announced that a dinner dance will occur at the Pontelandolfo Community Club on Friday, October 18th, 2013; the cost is $120 per couple, and the event honors several area Italians for their community contributions. he also announced that, on October 22nd, 2013, the Time Expo Museum is sponsoring an Italian Heritage night; the 6:30 p.m. event is free of cost, and will have 14 stations - each specializing in various aspects of Italian history and contributions in the United States.
Sherry LaCoursiere, Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, was absent, and no report was provided.
Mike Gimmelli, Co-Chairperson of the Golf Tournament Committee, announced that he is working with other lodges to determine the feasibility of the event, which is tentatively planned for May of 2014.
Linda Jacovino, Chairperson of the Culture Committee, is investigating the possiblity of hosting a Movie and Wine night, to be held perhaps in January. She is also considering a bust trip to the Warner Theater in the spring.
The Waterbury Arts Magnet School is putting on a 2:00 p.m. show on November 11th, 2013 at the Palace Theater; there is no charge, but seating is limited.
A Veterans' Mass, including tributes to those whom have served in the United States Armed Forces, will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, and will be followed by a luncheon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School.
The Order spoke at length about food donations and monetary contributions to the various charities in the area, including Saint Vincent de Paul Ministry of Waterbury, Connecticut. Member Paul Scampolino, Instructor/Manager of the Merriman Culinary School & Soup Kitchen/Food Pantry, one of Saint Vincent de Paul's Mission of Waterbury divisions, was on hand, and educated Order members of various misconceptions of the food pantry industry and monetary versus food donations. Non-perishable children's food items, such as easy-open juices, drinks, and soups, is the select item of choice to bring to the next meeting.
A list of Officers, Trustees, and Members will be available to members at the next meeting of the Order, which will take place on Veteran's Day, November 11th, 2013. The Christmas Dinner will be held on December 9th, 2013.
