Walk for Dyslexia 2016Despite the frumpy wet weather, dedicated community supporters came out in great numbers to walk the Walk for Dyslexia. Step off was at 1:00 p.m., but by 12: 30, well over 100 pedestrians had already signed in. At least another 100 area residents had preregistered, making this year's event a probable records breaker. The event, which started at the Masonic Lodge on Highland Avenue in Town Plot Hill, attracted more than just Waterburians. People from Prospect, Wolcott, and undoubtedly many other towns, walked to raise awareness and donations for the training and education of children whom are afflicted by dyslexia. This was an all-volunteer event, and 100% of the money raised is donated directly to the Children's Dyslexia Center of Connecticut, which is owned by the Masonic Lodge, on Highland Avenue. It took about 6 minutes for all of the walkers to kick off, but the 2-mile trek was attempted at varying paces, but the last person to complete the walk was about 26 minutes behind the first person to finish. When the walk kicked off, the scene was akin a mob-like parade - Chipman Street was lined with a solid wall of people for about a third of a mile. Depicted below are just a couple of handfuls of participants, and some Waterbury Police Explorers, nearing the end of their journey.
